FORT WAYNE, Ind.-Duke University junior Andrew Wenger tallied a goal in the 60th minute to lead the 23rd-ranked Blue Devils to a 1-1 tie in an exhibition match against No. 17 Indiana at the ShinDigZ National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind. Christopher Tweed-Kent provided the assist on Duke's goal.
"I think we just kept plugging along," Wenger said. "We played well at times in the first half. We just need to up our tempo a little bit and in the second half we just played a little more sharp. We picked the ball up in some good areas and that made a big difference instead of winning the ball in the back and playing through the midfield."
The first half was a hard-fought 45 minutes. The Hoosiers created the early opportunities, playing in behind the Duke backline. As the Blue Devils defense shored up, Duke starting to get into the attack and generating chances of its own.
Wenger registered the game's first shot on goal midway through the half. A strong piece of individual work put the native of Lititz, Pa., a good look at goal, but his shot was parried away by Indiana goalkeeper Michael Soderlund.
The Hoosiers grabbed the 1-0 lead with 10:42 left in the opening stanza when Harrison Petts finished a pass from Chris Estridge through the box. Petts struck the ball from 15 yards out low into the right corner of the goal past an outstretched Duke keeper James Belshaw.
The Blue Devils came out strong in the second half, pressing forward and putting pressure on the Indiana defense. Duke's pressure paid off nearly 15 minutes into the frame as Wenger came through with a spectacular goal.
Tweed-Kent found Wenger open at the top of the box. With a deft first touch to set up a left-footed shot, Wenger placed the shot perfectly past an extended Soderlund and into the right side netting to make it 1-1.
"Chris made a great run in the corner," Wenger said. "I saw a little space and he laid it off to me. I faked like I was going to take a touch with my right and let it come across my body and I curled it to the left post and the goalie was slow getting down."
Just over 20 minutes later, the Hoosiers earned a great opportunity with a penalty kick. Alec Purdie lined to take the kick for Indiana and struck it to the left side of the goal. Belshaw read Purdie perfectly and made the stop and Duke cleared it out of danger to keep the game even at one.
Duke nearly went ahead four minutes later as Wenger struck again. After Soderlund came off of his line, Wenger took advantage and tried to put it over Soderlund's head as he retreated back in goal. However, Hoosier defender Tommy Meyer was there to head it off the line.
The Blue Devils continued to press forward in the final five minutes, but could not get on the scoreboard.
Indiana held an 11-8 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 lead in the first half. The Blue Devils outshot the Hoosiers 7-6 in the second 45 minutes.
Belshaw had four saves in 90 minutes of action, while Indiana goalkeepers Luis Soffner and Soderlund combined for three stops.
Duke will play its final exhibition game on Sunday, August 21 against IPFW at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available at GoDuke.com.
