Duke, which tied No. 17 Indiana, 1-1, on Friday night, starts the 2011 season on Friday, Aug. 26 at UNC Greensboro at 8 p.m.
The action went back and forth throughout much of the first half. The Mastodons missed on a couple of high quality scoring opportunities, including a header that skipped just wide of the post.
The Blue Devils came through and grabbed the 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Nick Palodichuk fed Andrew Morales through the penalty area. Demonstrating patience, Morales waited for support and calmly slipped the ball across the face of the goal where Tweed-Kent tapped it in for the first goal of the morning.
Duke continued to increase its time of possession and went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils held a narrow 7-6 lead in shots through the opening 45 minutes.
Just over seven minutes into the second half, IPFW got on the board to even the score. Jason Mills had a nice individual effort to get into the box. His initial shot from 12 yards out was stopped by Duke goaltender Jan Trnka-Amrhein, but Mills calmly put the rebound in the back of the net to make it 1-1.
Duke controlled the run of play for much of the second half, but was unable to get on the scoreboard. A flurry of late action from the Mastodons was stymied by the Duke defense as the squads battled to the draw.
For the game, Duke had a 13-10 advantage on shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had four corner kicks. Trnka-Amrhein went the distance for the Blue Devils, making three saves. Ryan Bristol and Brandon Cloutier combined for seven saves in the contest. Five Blue Devils earned their first career starts.
The Blue Devils officially kick off the season on Aug. 26 at UNC Greensboro. The match is slated to begin at 8 p.m., at the UNCG soccer stadium.
