DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's soccer team took home a hard-fought point in conference play, tallying a 2-2 draw with No. 16 North Carolina on Friday night at Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils (7-8-1, 1-5-1 ACC) and Tar Heels (7-2-4, 3-1-3 ACC) both scored once in the run of play and once from the penalty spot, with
Ethan Congleton scoring both goals for Duke.
Congleton recorded his brace in the first half, with a penalty-kick goal in the 15th minute and a right-footed strike in the 40th. Fellow freshman
Jack Ottley earned an assist on the second goal, with the two classmates now tied for the team lead with 21 points each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams settled into the run of play in the opening 10 minutes, with possession traded in the midfield. North Carolina tested Duke's goalkeeper, Max Deisenhofer, in the 15th minute, as the freshman made three saves in quick succession.
- The Blue Devils opened the scoring less than 30 seconds later, with Jack Ottley drawing a penalty and Ethan Congleton converting from the spot. The Tar Heels answered just over five minutes later, knotting the score at 1-1 off a free kick.
- Ulfur Bjornsson and Jamie Kabuusu subbed into the contest with 10 minutes on the clock before halftime, making their first appearances since Sept. 10 and Sept. 18, respectively.
- Bjornsson made an immediate impact, setting up a header for Ottley in the box in the 40th minute. While Ottley's shot was turned away, he was still credited with an assist, as Congleton promptly deposited the loose rebound into the net.
- After 45 minutes, the Blue Devils continued to hold the 2-1 advantage.
- Both offenses forced saves by the opposing netminder, before North Carolina leveled the score, 2-2, from the spot in the 64th minute.
- The match continued to be contested in the midfield as the clock wound toward 10 minutes remaining. The final minutes were physical but did not yield any more goals, as Duke took home the hard-fought conference point.
