WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The Duke men's and women's track team opened up the outdoor season this weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational. The meet saw several throwerss toss their way into the record books.
Redshirt freshman Michelle Anumba won the meet and smashed the school record in the shot put with a mark of 51'7.75” a full six feet ahead of the previous school record set in 2004. Anumba now holds the indoor and outdoor shot put as well as the indoor weight throw school records. Freshman Erica Brand also added her name to Duke's top five list with an eighth place finish. Her throw of 42'4.25” is the third best throw in Duke history. Brand didn't stop her excellent performance there. A throw of 154'9.5” in the discuss netted second place at the meet and second all time.
In the Javelin, Amy Matulewicz, Shannon Sullivan and Andrea Hopkins took fourth, fifth and six with throws of 145'7.5”, 143'0.5” and 133'6”.25”. Closing out the field events for the Blue Devils was freshman Destiny Roseman in the triple jump. Her leap of 37'2.5” puts her in the number two spot all time at Duke.
On the track for the women, freshman Hannah Goranson also continued her success from the indoor season by running 14.10 in the 100m hurdles. It is the second fastest time run by a Duke athlete.
The throws saw success for the men as well. Senior Mike Schallmo took first in the men's discuss. His early season throw of 172'4.5” is only three feet short of his personal best of 175'1”. Also setting new personal bests was senior David Piccirilli. His toss of 169'10.5” was a seven foot improvement from his previous mark.
The Blue Devils will next compete at North Carolina State at the Raleigh Relays.
