DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke track and field team competed on opposite coasts this weekend and saw record setting success at both venues.
On the east coast, Duke saw action at the Raleigh Relays held at North Carolina State University. A big throw in the shot put of 53'1" from redshirt freshman Michelle Anumba is the third best mark thrown in the NCAA this year and set a new school record in the process. Andrea Hopkins was also able to put up top national mark with her toss of 156'10" in the javelin throw. Hopkins currently sits 11th in the nation. Freshman Erica Brand broke her way into the record books for the first time with a 150'9" throw in the women's discuss.
The men throwers also had a successful day. David Piccirilli threw an 18' personal best with his toss of 180'8", only two feet short of the current school record and senior Mike Schallmo also threw a personal best of 55' in the shot put.
On the track, the men won their third consecutive Raleigh Relays 4x1500m relay. Stephen Clark, Domenick DeMatteo, Mike Moverman and Ryan McDermott ran a 15:41.38 to win the event.
Over on the west coast, several of Duke's vaulters and distance women competed at the Stanford Invitational. The meet has historically gathered some of the top runners in the nation and provided an opportunity for Duke's runners to go up against some of the competition they hope to see at the NCAA championships in June.
The meet paid off for freshman Hannah Goranson ,sophomore Juliet Bottorff and senior Kristina Krasich. Goranson ran to a personal best, and new school record, 13.93 in the 100m hurdles. The freshman now holds both the indoor and outdoor school records in the short hurdle events. Bottorff also set a new personal best as well in the 10,000 meters. She sits third all-time at duke with a time of 33:18.45. Krasich improved her personal best to 10:33.64 in the 3,000m steeplechase and.
