Duke (5-5, 0-2 ACC) was in control throughout much of the contest, leading Richmond (3-7, 0-0 A-10) in shots, 8-5, and dominating the Spiders in penalty corners, 6-1. Senior goalkeeper Samantha Nelson made five saves, denying Richmond on a couple of close-range opportunities, to preserve the shutout, her third this season.
"I thought we played a phenomenal game of hockey yesterday and our goals was to come out and play with the same intensity," head coach Beth Bozman said. "I thought we were not quite as sharp and we didn't play with the same pace today, but we stuck to our passing game and took advantage of opportunities."
The Blue Devils' Karringten broke a scoreless tie in the 21st minute of play. Juniors Tara Jennings beat her defender down the right side and drilled a shot across the front of the cage, which Karringten tipped in for the score as Duke took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Duke would add to its lead early in the second half as freshman Grace Christus found an open Le Marchand by the Richmond goal. Le Marchand wasted no time redirecting the pass into the Spider cage, registering her team-leading third goal of the season.
"We've been talking all year about this being a season in progress," Bozman added. "There were times when we had five freshmen on the field yesterday and we felt we finally hit the bar that we've been striving to hit. Our goal now is to stay at that bar everyday and continue to improve because I think that we're so young."
The Blue Devils return to ACC action next weekend with No. 12 Boston College traveling to Durham to take on Duke. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. from Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. Duke will also host No. 11 Boston University on Sunday, Oct. 3 in a 1 p.m. match-up.
"[The Boston College game] is an ACC game, which is very important for us." Bozman said. "I think the whole weekend is very strong since BU beat BC. "If we play like we did yesterday, we are a very, very talented and competitive team."
