DURHAM, N.C. - The 13th-ranked Duke field hockey team controlled possession throughout much of the contest, but the Blue Devils had two goals waived off in a tough, 1-0 loss at the hands of No. 12 Boston College Saturday afternoon at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Duke (5-6, 0-3 ACC) led Boston College (7-4, 1-2 ACC) in both total shots (7-4) and penalty corners (4-2), but the Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the second half and were able to hang on for the narrow victory.
"I think we're a great team when we play well," head coach Beth Bozman said. "We did not stick to our game plan in the first half, but we got into our game plan in the second half and had possession time and completely dominated the second part of the second half. If we stick to our game plan and we execute the way we're capable, we'll win games."
The two teams appeared evenly matched in the first half, with Duke holding a 2-1 margin in shots heading into halftime. After the break, Duke freshman Caashia Karringten seemed to have her second goal in as many games after her shot off a penalty corner found the back of the cage, but the shot was ruled too high.
Boston College broke the 0-0 stalemate a few minutes later as Emily Kozniuk scored off a shot from the top of the arc, assisted by Marlotte van den Ber.
The Blue Devils continued to fight, outshooting the Eagles 4-0 in the final 10 minutes. However, another Duke goal was waived off after the official ruled the ball hit the body of freshman Emmie Le Marchand before what would have been the game-tying score.
"We have the opportunities," Bozman added. "and every game we've lost we had control of the game and outshot [our opponents]. We just need to find a way to get the ball in the cage. Our expectations are the same that they've been all along. We should be playing better than we are, executing our plans and we should be winning these games."
Duke concludes a seven-game home stretch Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. against the 11th-ranked Boston University Terriers at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. The Blue Devils then take to the road next weekend to face Maryland and American.
