With the two teams knotted in a 0-0 stalemate in the second period, Duke was able to earn a penalty corner at the 45:17 mark. The Terriers diffused the original penalty corner threat, but freshman Grace Christus corralled the ball beyond the arc and found open teammate Karringten three yards out from the cage. The Vancouver, British Columbia native wasted no time converting the opportunity into what turned out to be the game-deciding score.
"Our goal was to try to shoot and shoot," head coach Beth Bozman said. "and we finally ... put one in. It was a good goal for Caashia. She's been progressing throughout the season and has really started to come into her own."
Early in the contest, Boston University (7-4, 1-0 America East) pressured the Devil defense, taking the first five shots of the game in the opening nine minutes, but Duke (6-6, 0-3 ACC) settled down and did not allow another BU shot the rest of the opening half. The Blue Devils controlled the rest of the contest, outshooting the Terriers, 6-4, for the remainder of the game.
"BU is a really talented team," Bozman added. "They play a very different style than what we're used to and they kind of went at us. We had a lot of possession time, but they had the scoring opportunities. We had to gut this win out, but we executed and we scored when we needed to, then we preserved the win."
Duke senior goalkeeper Samantha Nelson made six saves in the game to earn her fourth shut out of the season, while her Boston University counterpart, Amanda Smith, stopped two Duke shots.
The Blue Devils return to action next weekend, hitting the road to take on Maryland Saturday, Oct. 9 in College Park, before facing American on Sunday, Oct. 10 in Washington, D.C. Both games are scheduled for 1 p.m. starts.
