For the game, North Carolina held a 6-5 advantage in shots, however, Duke led 6-4 in penalty corners. The Blue Devil defense held the Tar Heel offense, which averaged 4.71 goals and 22.3 shots per game coming in to Saturday's game, in check as a defensive struggle ensued from the opening whistle. North Carolina's single goal was its lowest goal output this season as the Tar Heels had scored three or more goals in every game thus far.
Senior goalkeeper Samantha Nelson stopped four Tar Heel shots in the first half to preserve a 0-0 tie heading into the intermission. The Duke defense continued to thwart the Tar Heel offense in the second half, but in the 60th minute, North Carolina's Caitlin Van Sickle converted a penalty corner opportunity into the game's lone goal.
Next up, Duke will face Richmond tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 26 in a 1 p.m. match-up at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
