DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke Athletics announced today that women's golf National Player of the Year, Amanda Blumenherst, and college lacrosse's all-time leading scorer, Zack Greer, have earned the TAGHeuer Trophy Most Valuable Athlete awards for the Blue Devils in the Carlyle Cup for 2007-08. Blumenherst becomes Duke's first two-time Carlyle Cup MVP, having won the honor as a freshman following the 2005-06 season. UNC captured the Carlyle Cup, 18-8 this past season
The Carlyle Cup is an annual all-sport competition between Duke and the University of North Carolina. Carlyle & Company, a Greensboro, North Carolina based jeweler with 38 stores across the country including 12 in North Carolina, supports the competition. The annual winner retains and prominently displays the Carlyle Cup each year. The TAG Trophy is given annually to the most valuable athlete in the Carlyle Cup competition between the two schools.
Blumenherst, the three-time National Player of the Year, capped off Duke's 13th straight ACC title in style. The junior from Scottsdale, Ariz., drained a six foot par putt on 18 to push Duke to the crown while also winning the individual title by one shot in the process. The individual title was Blumenherst's third straight. Duke won the point over UNC by virtue of its first place finish.
Greer netted five goals with three assists in Duke's 19-9 victory over UNC at Koskinen Stadium. Playing before over 4,000 fans, Greer broke the Duke career scoring record in the game against the Tar Heels. A senior from Whitby, Ontario, Greer finished his Duke career as the NCAA's career scoring leader.
Former winners of the TAGHeuer Trophy from Duke have been some of Duke's greatest athletes including basketball All-Americas Jason Williams and Alana Beard, women's golf U.S Amateur and NCAA champion Virada Nirapathpongporn, football Duke career rushing leader Chris Douglas, and lacrosse National Player of the Year Matt Danowski.
