DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 9 Duke field hockey team picked up the weekend sweep over opponents from the Boston area, defeating Boston University by a score of 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Williams Field to move to 8-3 (1-2 ACC) on the season. The Blue Devils also knocked off No. 13 Boston College, 5-0, yesterday for the team's first conference win of 2008.
The Blue Devils did not allow a goal over the weekend, outshooting the opposition by a tally of 45-13 in the two games, collecting a pair of shutouts. Three different Blue Devils scored two goals in the wins.
“We're happy to walk away with two wins this weekend,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “We played very well yesterday, and were not as sharp today but we found a way to win and that's ultimately the most important thing. We have to refocus and stay very committed to playing like we did [against Boston College] heading into our big game against Maryland next weekend.”
Duke was propelled by the offense of junior forward Amie Survilla, who netted both goals on a pair of assists from senior Laura Suchoski.
Survilla's first goal came 7:50 into the contest as she took the pass from Suchoski square in front of the cage and drilled it into the bottom left corner to put Duke up 1-0 early.
The score remained 1-0 through halftime, until Survilla's second goal in the 40th minute distanced the Blue Devils even further over the Terriers (5-7). Suchoski sent the ball in to Survilla, who waited on the left of the circle and sent it in for her second of the day and fifth of the season.
The Terriers managed just five shots in the contest against Duke's defense, only two of which were on goal. Samantha Nelson recorded the pair of stops in the cage to pick up her sixth win and third shutout in the cage for the Blue Devils.
Survilla led Duke with five shots in the game, followed by Suchoski's four and Marian Dickinson's two. Boston U's leading goal scorer, Nikki Lloyd, was held to two shots while three other Terriers took one apiece. Duke out-shot BU, 11-3, after halftime and held the 8-0 edge in penalty corners.
Kim Kastuk posted eight saves between the posts for Boston University. Duke improved to 5-2 all-time against BU.
In the neutral-site game that followed between Appalachian State and Boston College ? still around from yesterday's tilt with Duke ? the Eagles routed ASU 11-0 at Williams Field.
The weekend marked the end of the Blue Devils' six-game early-season homestand, as the team will next travel to face No. 1 Maryland (10-1, 3-0 ACC) next Sat., Oct. 11, in College Park, Md., at 1 p.m. Duke then returns home once again, to take on Ohio University in a mid-week game on Tues., Oct. 14 at Williams Field. That game is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
