WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? After giving up two runs to Duke in the top of the first, Wake Forest scored six runs in the bottom half of the inning and later added a six-run seventh on their way to a 13-6 win over the Blue Devils on Friday afternoon at Hooks Stadium. The Blue Devils fall to 26-18 overall and 6-16 in the ACC while the Demon Deacons improve to 25-22 and 9-13, respectively.
Duke jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Following a leadoff walk to centerfielder Jimmy Gallagher, rightfielder Jonathan Anderson sent a high chopper over Tyler Smith's head at third for a single. Catcher Matt Williams followed with a single to center to load the bases. Gallagher then scored the game's first run on a passed ball that allowed Anderson to move to third and Williams to second. Anderson would then score on a sacrifice fly to center by third baseman Brett Bartles.
Wake Forest responded with a six-run first inning to take a 6-2 lead. Leftfielder Brett Linnenkohl doubled to center to start the frame before advancing to third on a single through the right side by centerfielder Ben Terry. First baseman Allan Dykstra then sent an RBI-double down the right field line, scoring Linnenkohl and moving Terry to third. Designated hitter Willy Fox followed with a two-run single to left to drive in Terry and Dykstra. Back-to-back singles by rightfielder Evan Ocheltree and shortstop Dustin Hood loaded the bases before second baseman Andy Goff lined a two-run single to center. Hood would later score on a Duke error for the inning's final run.
Leftfielder Tim Sherlock lined a leadoff double to center to start the top of the second. Shortstop Gabriel Saade then moved Sherlock to third on a fly ball to center that Terry caught up against the wall. Second baseman Kyle Butler followed with an RBI-single up the middle, scoring Sherlock and cutting Wake's lead to 6-3.
Dykstra added a sacrifice fly to left in the bottom of the fourth to score catcher Austin Jones, extending Wake's lead to 7-3.
Saade had a two-out double to left to get the Blue Devils going in the top of the sixth. Following a walk to Butler, Gallagher lined a two-run double into the gap in left center, scoring Saade and Butler to make it a 7-5 ballgame.
The Deacs added six runs in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead 13-5. After Linnenkohl singled to right and Terry was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, Dykstra sent an RBI-single to right, scoring Linnenkohl and moving Terry to third. Fox followed with a two-run double to right center to bring in Terry and Dykstra. Ocheltree then drew a walk before Hood doubled down the left field line to score Fox. Two batters later, Smith laced a two-run single through the right side, driving in Ocheltree and Hood.
Following a one-out walk to Sherlock to start the top of the eighth, Saade doubled down the left field line, giving the Blue Devils two runners in scoring position. Butler then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Sherlock and cutting Wake's lead to 13-6.
Wake Forest starter Brad Kledzik improved to 4-3 on the season, holding the Blue Devils to five runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
Butler led the Blue Devils at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a career-high tying two RBI and a run scored. Gallagher finished 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, Saade was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored and Williams went 2-for-5. Bartles finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, Sherlock was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and Anderson was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Freshman Alexander Hassan fell to 2-4 after allowing six runs on eight hits in the first inning. Freshman Will Currier came on in relief and held Wake to one unearned run on two hits in 3.2 innings and freshman Jeremy Gould worked a scoreless eighth for the Blue Devils.
Game two will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be carried live by FSN South. Senior right-hander Tony Bajoczky (8-2, 2.70 ERA) will face Wake lefty Garrett Bullock (3-1, 4.91 ERA) on Saturday.
