The Blue Devils fall to 26-19 on the season and 6-17 in the ACC while the Demon Deacons improve to 26-22 and 10-13, respectively.
Leftfielder Brett Linnenkohl had a one-out single up the middle to get the Deacs going in the 10th. Two batters later, first baseman Allan Dykstra singled to right, moving Linnenkohl to third. Designated hitter Willy Fox was then intentionally walked to load the bases before Hood delivered the game-winning knock to right center.
Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. After Hood had a one-out single through the right side, he advanced to second on a groundout by second baseman Andy Goff. Rightfielder Evan Ocheltree then lined an RBI-single to left to score Hood.
Duke tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. Centerfielder Jimmy Gallagher lined a one-out single to left to begin the inning. Rightfielder Jonathan Anderson followed with a double down the left field line, moving Gallagher to third. Gallagher then scored on a grounder to short by catcher Matt Williams.
After Dykstra was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fourth, Fox moved him to second with a single to left. Hood moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt before Dykstra scored on a groundout by Goff, giving the Deacs a 2-1 lead.
The Blue Devils tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth. Following a two-out walk to Anderson, Williams singled through the right side to move Anderson into scoring position. Anderson then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt at first and scored when first baseman Nate Freiman sent an RBI-single up the middle.
Duke got out of a jam in the top of the fifth to keep the score tied at 2-2. With third baseman Tyler Smith standing on third and two outs in the frame, centerfielder Ben Terry sent a line drive to left where Alexander Hassan made an outstanding diving grab to end the inning.
Dykstra led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to right, giving Wake a 3-2 advantage.
Gallagher sent a towering leadoff blast to right on a 2-2 pitch to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the ninth. It was the fifth home run of the season for Gallagher and the 13th of his career.
Gallagher led the Blue Devils at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a solo homer and two runs scored. Anderson finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, Freiman was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Saade went 2-for-5 with a double. Nicolla finished 2-for-5 and Williams was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Wake reliever Josh Ellis picked up the win to improve to 4-2 on the season. He gave up Gallagher's home run in the ninth but was able to work a scoreless 10th inning.
Duke freshman Michael Seander worked a scoreless eighth and ninth before giving up the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. He struck out a career-high four batters in the game. Senior Tony Bajoczky held Wake to three runs on six hits in seven innings of work and struck out three batters in another impressive outing.
The series finale will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils will then take a week and a half off before returning to the field at UNC Greensboro on May 9. Duke will then play host to Virginia Tech May 11-13 in their final home ACC series of the season.
