Duke Has Strong Showing In Second Day Of ACC Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- The Duke men's and women's outdoor track and field teams met with much success on the second day of the ACC Championships at Kehoe Track on the campus of the University of Maryland. Nine Blue Devils qualified for the postseason, nine scored points or qualified for the finals in their event on Saturday, and six posted marks worthy of top five all-time Duke performances. Both the men's and women's teams stood in eighth place with 16 and 21 points, respectively.

Women's: Freshman Alexa Revord competed in the discus on Friday afternoon and hit a distance of 150'-05.” That placed her 11th for the event and qualified her for the ECAC Championships for the third time this season.

In the very competitive 1,500 meters, freshman Kate Van Buskirk placed sixth in the preliminaries on Friday afternoon. Her time of 4:31.10 was good for an ECAC qualifier. Van Buskirk will run Saturday at 1 p.m. in the 1,500m finals.

Sophomore Michelle Seibert qualified for the NCAA East Regional and the ECAC's in the 800 meters with her mark of 2:07.80. That is the fourth-fastest time in school history and was the second-best time in the 800m preliminaries at the ACC's. The finals are Saturday at 2:10 p.m.

In the final women's event of the day, sophomore Patricia Loughlin ran a 10:54.99 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. It was her first time qualifying for the ECAC's this season and also is the third-best time in Duke history in the event.

Men's: The men got off to a good start on Friday morning as freshman Michael Schallmo threw the discus 162'-09,” placing fifth in the event. Schallmo also qualified for the IC4A Championships for the second time this season and moved up to second on the all-time Duke discus list.

Freshman Michael Kotecki jumped 6'-06.75” in the high jump which was good for sixth place at the ACC's. That mark was just short of the IC4A-qualifying height but did place him fifth on the all-time Duke high jump list.

Junior Tyler Clarke finished the decathlon in fifth place with 6,811 points. That score not only qualified him for the IC4A's for the second time this year, but broke the seven-year-old Duke record of 6,633 points in the decathlon.

With a 47.80 showing in the 400 meters, senior Daniel King not only put himself in the ACC championships finals at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, but qualified for the IC4A's for the first time this season.

Sophomore Chris Rowland competed in the 800 meters on Friday evening in College Park and ran a 1:52.26. That time qualified him for the IC4A's and put him in the finals at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Rounding up the day was sophomore Kevin McDermott in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. McDermott ran a personal best 9:03.73 and placed fifth at the meet. That time qualified him for the NCAA East Regional and the IC4A's and also was good for the fourth-best time on the all-time Duke records list.
