COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- The ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships wrapped up on Saturday for the Duke women's and men's teams in College Park, Md. Overall it was a very successful weekend for both squads as there were a total of 24 postseason-qualifying performances as well as eight marks worthy of Duke's top five records' lists.
Women's: The women's team placed ninth out of 12 teams with 45 points. Virginia Tech took home the title as they accumulated 144.5 points.
Freshman Kate Van Buskirk ran in the 1,500 meter finals on Saturday afternoon and finished third with a time of 4:25.78. That mark qualified her for the NCAA East Regional and the ECAC Championships.
In the 800 meter finals, sophomore Michelle Seibert took fourth place with a 2:09.17 run. That time was also good for NCAA East Regional and ECAC qualifying.
In the 5,000 meters, two Blue Devils shined on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Maddie McKeever placed second and senior Elizabeth Wort finished fourth. McKeever ran at a clip of 16:26.84 and Wort went the distance in 16:40.21. Both times qualified for the NCAA East Regional and ECAC's.
Men's: The men's team finished 11th for the weekend with a total of 29 points. Florida State won the ACC Championships with 166.5 team points.
The men started off the day on the right foot with junior Ian Cassidy and senior Jonathan Fay in the pole vault. Cassidy took home fifth place with his vault of 16'-06.75.” That not only qualified him for the NCAA East Regional and the IC4A Championships, but was the fourth-best pole vault in school history. Fay placed 10th and qualified for the IC4A's with his 15'-11.0” mark.
Junior Chris Spooner had a ninth place finish in the 1,500 meters with his time of 3:50.31. That mark qualified Spooner for the IC4A's for the first time this season.
In the 400 meters, senior Daniel King completed his final ACC Championships with a fifth place finish. His time of 47.80 was also good for IC4A-qualifying.
Chris Rowland placed sixth in the 800 meters in College Park with a time of 1:51.03. The sophomore also qualified for the IC4A's with that mark.
To finish out the day and the meet, the men's 4x400 meter relay team of junior Peter Lewellen, junior Jade Ellis, junior Matt Danforth and King finished seventh. Their time of 3:14.83 qualified them for the IC4A's.
Carlyle Cup: The seventh annual Carlyle Cup competition between Duke and North Carolina concludes this weekend. The current score is tied, 12.5 to 12.5. Duke won two points this weekend for victories in women's lacrosse and in rowing while North Carolina took the points for men's and women's track and field. The one remaining point is in the ACC men's golf championship, which concludes on Sunday. However, UNC could win back one-half point each in men's and women's lacrosse if they meet and defeat Duke in their respective conference tournaments next week. UNC needs 13 points to retain the cup, while Duke must have at least 13.5 to win back the Cup.
A Look Ahead: The Duke outdoor track and field team will compete in the 113th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. from April 26-28, at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
