DURHAM, N.C. – Duke senior Tony Bajoczky tossed seven innings of shutout ball and freshman Michael Seander worked a scoreless eighth and ninth as the Blue Devils defeated Georgia Tech, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 18-8 overall and 1-7 in the ACC while the Yellow Jackets fall to 13-11 and 4-4, respectively.
Bajoczky held Georgia Tech to five hits in the game and struck out five batters without allowing a walk to improve to 4-2 on the season. Seander then limited the Yellow Jackets to one hit over the final two innings to pick up his sixth save of the year. Seander's sixth save ties the fourth-best single-season output in Duke history.
Duke took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Right fielder Jimmy Gallagher singled to right to start the frame and advanced to third when center fielder Jonathan Anderson's bunt single was mishandled by Tech second baseman Patrick Long. Left fielder Alexander Hassan then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Gallagher.
The Blue Devils added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 3-0. Anderson got on base with a one-out single before moving to second on a two-out single by first baseman Nate Freiman. Third baseman Brett Bartles then laced a two-run double to the left center field wall to score Anderson and Freiman.
After Seander got Long to fly out to right to start the top of the ninth, third baseman Brad Feltes reached on a Duke error to keep the inning alive. Seander then got first baseman Tony Plagman to ground into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Bartles went 2-for-4 with a two-run double to lead the Blue Devils at the plate. Anderson finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, Hassan was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Gallagher and Freiman both finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Georgia Tech starter John Goodman fell to 1-1, allowing one run on four hits in seven innings of work.
Duke and Georgia Tech will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Freshman left-hander Christopher Manno (0-0, 4.32 ERA) will face Tech lefty Ryan Turner (1-3, 4.32 ERA) on Sunday.
