DURHAM, N.C. – Georgia Tech scored three runs in the first two innings and got a solid six-inning start out of lefty Ryan Turner on their way to a 5-1 win over Duke on Sunday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils fall to 18-9 overall and 1-8 in the ACC while the Yellow Jackets improve to 14-11 and 5-4, respectively.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After center fielder Danny Payne was hit by a pitch to start the game, first baseman Luke Murton lined an RBI-triple into the gap in right center to score Payne. Shortstop Michael Fisher followed with an RBI-double to right center to score Murton.
Three straight walks to third baseman Patrick Long, left fielder Jay Dantzler and Payne loaded the bases for the Yellow Jackets in the top of the second. Murton then lifted a sacrifice fly along the left field line to score Long, giving Georgia Tech a 3-0 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 5-0. Second baseman Jeff Ussery singled to center and stole second to begin the frame. After Dantzler drew a walk to give Georgia Tech runners on first and second, Murton laced a two-out two-run triple to right center, scoring Ussery and Dantzler.
Duke scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Center fielder Jonathan Anderson hit a leadoff single through the left side of the infield to start the inning. After third baseman Brett Bartles drew a two-out walk, pinch hitter Jonathan Nicolla sent an RBI-single through the right side to score Anderson.
Turner improved to 2-3 on the season, holding the Blue Devils to one run on seven hits in six innings of work.
Freshman Christopher Manno fell to 0-1 on the year, allowing three runs on two hits in the first two innings. Sophomore Andrew Wolcott struck out five batters in five innings of relief for the Blue Devils and freshman Michael Ness held the Yellow Jackets to two hits in three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Anderson, Bartles, Nicolla, left fielder Alexander Hassan, first baseman Nate Freiman, catcher Matt Williams and second baseman Kyle Butler all collected a hit to lead Duke at the plate on the day.
