DURHAM, N.C. - No. 14 Duke fell to 24th-ranked Maryland, 85-77, in ACC men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Greg Paulus led five Blue Devils in double figures with 20 points.
The Blue Devils, who had their four-game winning streak snapped, fall to 22-8 overall and 8-7 in league play while the Terrapins improve to 23-7 overall and 9-6 in the conference with their sixth consecutive victory. Duke celebrated Senior Night as it marked the final home game for
Joe Pagliuca.
Maryland shot 52.9 percent (18-of-34) from the floor in the first half to claim a 44-38 lead at intermission. Duke stayed close in the opening stanza thanks to 13 points from
DeMarcus Nelson and six three-point buckets in 13 attempts.
In the second half, Maryland built a 12-point lead at 56-44 on a foul shot by Ekene Ibekwe with 13:11 left in the game. The Blue Devils trimmed the margin to one thanks to a 13-2 spurt, but the Terrapins responded with a 6-2 run to claim a 64-59 advantage on James Gist's layup at the 6:31 mark.
After
Greg Paulus pulled Duke to within three points with a pull-up jumper,
Jon Scheyer tied the game at 64-64 on Duke's next possession with a three-point basket in transition with 5:39 on the clock. Greivis Vasquez then countered with a layup to push the Terrapins back ahead, 66-64, and D.J. Strawberry's five straight points pushed the lead to seven with 3:52 remaining. Duke would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.
Paulus buried eight-of-15 field goal attempts including four-of-eight three-pointers for his 20 points. He has scored in double figures in nine straight contests and 13 of his last 14 outings. Nelson added 17 points and
Gerald Henderson came off the bench to score 15 points.
Josh McRoberts contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots while
Jon Scheyer had 10 points.
For Maryland, Mike Jones scored a game-best 25 points while Ibekwe and Strawberry had 17 apiece.
The Blue Devils close out the regular season on Sunday at North Carolina (4 p.m.; CBS).
