DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke volleyball team opened the Atlantic Coast Conference season in impressive fashion with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-22, 30-25) sweep over Clemson on Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils improve to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the ACC while the Tigers fall to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.
After the Blue Devils and Tigers traded the first 14 points in the opening game, Duke went on a 16-8 run to take a 23-15 lead. Clemson managed to cut Duke's lead to six points at 24-18 but that was as close as they would get as the Blue Devils used a 6-3 run to close out game one, 30-21.
Duke scored the first point in game two but Clemson answered with nine straight points to take a 9-1 lead. The Blue Devils battled back with an 18-10 run to tie the game at 19-19. After the Tigers pulled ahead, 22-20, Duke went on a 10-0 run to close out the game, 30-22, giving the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Blue Devils scored the first six points in game three before extending their lead to 10 points at 15-5. Duke would extend their lead to 13 points on two occasions before Clemson closed the gap to seven points at 27-20. The Tigers eventually cut the Duke lead to four points at 29-25 but a kill by junior Ali Hausfeld ended the match with a 30-25 game three victory.
Hausfeld paced the Blue Devil attack with a match-high 38 assists, passing Susan Wilson for third place on Duke's all-time career assists list with 3,395 career assists. Junior Carrie DeMange posted her fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 14 digs while freshman Rachael Moss recorded her fifth career double-double with a team-high 13 kills and 13 digs.
Senior Tealle Hunkus and sophomore Jourdan Norman had seven kills apiece and Hausfeld added four kills for the Blue Devils offense.
Junior Jenny Shull led the Duke defense with a match-high 24 digs while Hausfeld added eight digs and three blocks on the night. DeMange and Norman also had three blocks for the Blue Devils in the win.
Sophomore Jeannette Abbott led Clemson with a match-high 16 kills and junior Meghan Steiner added nine kills. Junior Leslie Mansfield and freshman Didem Ege had 15 digs apiece while senior Anna Vallinch added 10 digs defensively for the Tigers.
The Blue Devils will host Georgia Tech tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Yellow Jackets fell to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in the ACC after a 3-0 loss to Wake Forest earlier Friday night.
