DURHAM, N.C. ? Junior Carrie DeMange powered down 23 kills while hitting .405 to lead Duke to a 3-1 (30-21, 29-31, 30-18, 30-18) win over Georgia Tech on Saturday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the win, Duke improves to 9-2 overall and pushes its ACC record to 2-0 while the Yellow Jackets fall to 8-4 and 0-2, respectively.
DeMange added 15 digs and three blocks defensively to her performance for her sixth double-double of the season. A total of four Blue Devils reached double figures in kills with sophomore Sue Carls pushing down 12 and senior Tealle Hunkus and freshman Rachael Moss recording 10 apiece.
Junior Ali Hausfeld paced the offense with 54 assists and also had eight kills, hit .467 and had two service aces. Defensively, she recorded 10 digs and three blocks. Junior Jenny Shull led the defensive effort with 30 digs, the fifth time she's reached 30 digs in her career.
Moss added a career-high 21 digs on defense while sophomore Jourdan Norman led the way defensively at the net with seven blocks and also added seven kills. Senior Polly Bendush had a fantastic game serving and finished with two service aces.
The two teams played the first game close as Duke held a 12-10 lead early. Solid serving by Shull pushed Duke's lead to 24-15 and the two teams played evenly the rest of the way as Duke won, 30-21.
Game two was back-and-forth throughout. The game saw 11 ties before it was tied at 16 all mid-way through the game. Tech pushed to a three-point advantage at 23-20 before Hunkus served Duke back into the match. She served three straight and with her only ace of the match, Duke took a 24-23 lead and looked to be in control.
On the next play, Carls slipped while going up for a kill and the momentum shifted slightly back to Tech. Duke held off two game points and pushed the game to a 29 all tie but Tech finished the game out with a 31-29 victory.
After the break between games two and three, Duke jumped all over the Yellow Jackets, pushing to leads of 8-1 and 10-2 early. Hausfeld served five straight including one of her two aces to give Duke the early advantage. The two teams played fairly evenly before Bendush served three straight to end the match with a 30-18 win for the Blue Devils.
Bendush picked up in game four where she left off in game three and served nine straight to give Duke an early 9-1 lead. The Blue Devils pushed the lead to 12 at 18-6 after a Shull service ace and fittingly, Bendush served Duke to a 29-17 lead before the Blue Devils finally finished the match out at 30-18.
Next up for the Blue Devils is a pair of area rivals as they will play at N.C. State on Wednesday before heading to Chapel Hill for a date with North Carolina on Saturday. Duke's next home match will be Friday, Oct. 6 against Virginia with first serve set for 7 p.m.
