KNOXVILLE, Tenn./CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --The Duke track and field team wrapped up the weekend's competition at two venues Saturday, highlighted by a dominant performance in the women's steeplechase at the Carolina Fast Times at North Carolina and a relay that fell just shy of the IC4A standard at Tennessee's Sea Ray Relays.
At North Carolina, three current Blue Devils and one Duke redshirt finished in the top seven in the 3,000m steeplechase, and freshman Maddie McKeever recorded the second-best time in school history for a runner-up finish in her first time competing in the event as a collegian. McKeever ran a 10:56.37, missing the ECAC qualification by just over a second and coming in behind Duke's record-holder in the event, Liz Wort, who is redshirting this season and competed unattached. Wort won in a time of 10:31.17.
Following McKeever were graduate student Kelly Fillnow, whose fourth-place 11:13.80 etches her name in the Duke record book at No. 4, and freshman Patricia Loughlin, running a 12:06.96 for seventh place.
At Tennessee, two relays and Robert Weinstein in the javelin finished up a two-day event which saw the bulk of the Duke competition on Friday. Matt Danforth, Daniel King, Brett Morrell and Nick Trombold came the closest to qualifying for the IC4A Championships by clocking a time of 3:17.15 in the 4x400m relay. The foursome needed a 3:17.60 to meet the qualifying standard. Weinstein tossed the javelin 186-10 to place sixth in the open competition.
Eric Dooley competed in the javelin at the Fast Times meet and recorded a second-place finish with a throw of 167-5.
Duke's next competition will be the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, held April 20-22 at Wake Forest University.
