DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke's outside attack of senior Tealle Hunkus and freshman Rachael Moss helped the Duke volleyball team win its 29th consecutive match at Cameron Indoor Stadium Tuesday with a 3-0 (30-14, 36-34, 30-23) sweep over Wake Forest. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 22-3 overall and 15-1 in the ACC while the Demon Deacons fall to 13-12 and 9-7, respectively.
Hunkus led the way with a match-high 18 kills while hitting .368 while Moss had 15 kills, hit .387 and added 15 digs defensively. Junior Jenny Shull had 31 digs, the fourth time this season and seventh time in her career she's surpassed 30 digs in a match. Junior Ali Hausfeld had another impressive match with 51 assists, 11 digs and five kills while hitting .400 with two blocks. Junior Carrie DeMange added 11 kills and four blocks in the win.
Duke was all over Wake Forest in the first game as senior Polly Bendush recorded a service ace and pushed Duke to a 4-0 lead out of the gate. The two teams played evenly for a few rotations and then Shull found her niche behind the service line and pushed Duke on a 4-0 run to go up 14-6. After Hunkus had recorded seven kills in the first game, she then served the game's last five points to give Duke an impressive 30-14 win.
Shull had 12 digs in the first game while Moss had four kills and five digs. Hausfeld had 17 assists and led Duke as the Blue Devils hit .500 compared to .000 for Wake Forest.
Game two was close the entire way as Duke could never push ahead by more than three points and there were 21 ties. Duke didn't trail in the game until the end when Wake Forest had two game points at 32-31 and 34-33 but Duke then rallied and Moss had two straight kills to end the game with Duke eventually winning 36-34.
Hunkus added another eight kills in the second game while Moss pounded down seven more of her own. Shull had nine digs and DeMange recorded three of her four blocks. Hausfeld had 18 assists as Duke registered 24 kills in the second game.
Duke pushed ahead early in game three getting a 3-0 lead and never looked back. The game was relatively even when Bendush served five straight points to put the Blue Devils ahead 17-11 midway through and after sophomore Sue Carls got two straight kills, Duke held a comfortable 24-14 advantage. Duke played even and held a 28-18 lead but couldn't put the game away and had to wait for two Demon Deacon errors to end the game and the match at 30-23.
Hausfeld went on the offensive in the third game, recording three kills and 16 assists. Shull added 10 more digs while Moss and DeMange had four kills and Hunkus and Carls had three kills in the well-rounded effort.
Duke holds a three-game advantage in the loss column in the ACC standings with six matches remaining in the season. The Blue Devils will hit the road for two straight weekends, first visiting Maryland on Friday at 7 p.m. and then heading to Boston College on Sunday for a 12 noon match. After visits to Virginia and Virginia Tech the following weekend, the Blue Devils will wrap up the regular season at home with Florida State the day before Thanksgiving and Miami the day after.
