COLLEGE PARK, Md. ? Sophomore outside hitter Sue Carls posted a career-high 17 kills and freshman outside hitter Rachael Moss added a double-double with 10 kills and a team-best 24 digs to lead Duke past Maryland, 26-30, 30-22, 30-16, 30-28, in ACC volleyball action on Friday night.
The Blue Devils improve to 23-3 overall and 16-1 in league play while the Terrapins fall to 11-15 overall and 4-13 in the conference. Duke has now won 28 of its last 30 games against ACC opponents dating back to the 2005 season.
“In game one, we weren't playing very well and we were down 27-14 and we came back hard,” said Blue Devil head coach Jolene Nagel. “I was really pleased with how we came back and gained momentum heading into game two. I was pleased to see that we didn't give up and that we kept fighting in that game and that gave us momentum going into game two.”
In the opening game, Maryland jumped out to leads of 8-2 and 20-9 before holding its largest lead at 24-11. The Blue Devils responded with a 15-5 run that featured two kills apiece from Carls and Moss as Duke climbed to within 29-26 on a kill by junior setter Ali Hausfeld. The Terrapins were able to close the game out on a combined block by Beth Gillming and Katie Usher.
In game two, Duke used seven kills from junior middle blocker Carrie DeMange and six kills by senior outside hitter Tealle Hunkus for a 30-22 win. DeMange's seven kills came on nine attempts with one error for an impressive .667 hitting percentage. Carls then dominated game three ? won by the Blue Devils by a 30-16 count ? by hitting .786 with 11 kills in 14 swings with zero errors while Hausfeld posted 20 assists.
The Blue Devils were able to seal the victory with a 30-28 triumph in game four as DeMange and Hunkus registered five kills each. With the score tied at 27-27, Duke took advantage of a Maryland error and then sandwiched kills by Moss and sophomore middle blocker Jourdan Norman around a Terrapin point en route to the win.
Junior libero Jenny Shull was outstanding for the Blue Devils, picking up 17 digs to become the first player in Duke volleyball history to post 500 or more digs in two seasons. Shull's season total of 505 digs pushes her career total to 1,457 ? the third highest total in Blue Devil history behind Ashley Wacholder (1,818 from 1991-94) and Maureen Reindl (1,562 from 1994-97).
“Jenny did a tremendous job on defense tonight,” noted Nagel. “She got her hands on everything and she kept a lot of balls in play for us by her sheer desire.”
DeMange finished the night with 16 kills to increase her career total to 1,282 ? just 21 kills shy of cracking the top five leaders in school history. Hunkus contributed 12 kills, nine digs and a team-high six service aces while Hausfeld dished out 59 assists.
“We had great efforts offensively with four players reaching double digits in kills,” Nagel said. “Carrie does so many things that don't show up in the boxscore to help us win. Ali did a great job of moving the ball around and controlling the ball which allowed us to have four players in double digits in kills.”
Duke remains on the road to face Boston College on Sunday at 12 noon.
