BLACKSBURG, Va. ? One night after capturing the ACC title, the Duke volleyball team won its eighth straight conference match on Friday with a 3-0 (30-28, 30-23, 30-22) sweep over Virginia Tech at Cassell Coliseum. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 26-3 overall and 19-1 in the ACC while the Hokies fall to 15-13 and 9-10, respectively.
Duke's 19 wins in the ACC set a new conference record for most wins in a season, breaking the 18-win total set by North Carolina and Maryland last year. Duke's 26 overall wins now ranks tied for the fifth-best output in school history.
In the opening game, Duke spotted Virginia Tech a 5-0 lead before closing the gap to three points at 13-10. The Hokies would then go on a 7-3 run to grab a seven point lead at 20-13. The Blue Devils battled back and tied the score at 21 all with an 8-1 run before taking their first lead of the night at 22-21. Duke then held the lead for good to take game one, 30-28.
Duke scored the first two points of game two before Virginia Tech used a 5-1 run to take a 5-3 lead. The Hokies would hold the lead until the Blue Devils tied the score at nine all. Duke then went on a 13-7 run to pull ahead 22-16. Virginia Tech would cut the lead to three points at 25-22 but that was as close as they would get as Duke took a 2-0 lead with a 30-23 game two victory.
Virginia Tech opened game three with a 10-6 advantage but an 8-4 Duke run knotted the score at 14 all. The Blue Devils would then pull ahead 25-17 with an 11-3 run on their way to closing out the match, 30-22. Duke hit .342 in the final game while holding Virginia Tech to a .089 attack percentage.
Junior Carrie DeMange had a match-high nine kills to go along with 11 digs, five blocks, three assists and two service aces. With the nine kills tonight, DeMange moved into third place on Duke's all-time career kills list with 1,312.
Junior Ali Hausfeld led the way for the Blue Devils, pacing the offense with 30 assists. She also had seven kills on eight swings without an attack error to record a career-high .875 attack percentage. Hausfeld added eight digs, three blocks and a service ace in the win.
Sophomore Jourdan Norman registered eight kills, a .333 hitting percentage and six blocks while freshman Rachael Moss posted seven kills, 10 digs, a career-high five service aces and a career-high four blocks. Senior Tealle Hunkus chipped in four kills, four digs, one block and a service ace, sophomore Sue Carls had five kills and a .308 hitting percentage and senior Polly Bendush added a pair of service aces. Junior Jenny Shull anchored the Duke defense with a match-high 14 digs.
The Blue Devils will close out the regular season next week by hosting Florida State and Miami Nov. 22 and 24 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
