DURHAM, N.C. ? Junior Ali Hausfeld had an all-around stellar performance in leading No. 25 Duke to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 31-29) victory over Florida State Wednesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 27-3 overall and 20-1 in the ACC while the Seminoles finish their season at 19-12 and 13-9, respectively.
Hausfeld paced the Duke offense with 42 assists leading the team to a .235 hitting percentage. She also had five kills, hit .364 and had a service ace offensively and was just as brilliant on defense with six digs and a match-high six blocks.
The Blue Devils recorded their 30th consecutive victory at Cameron while Duke's 27 wins this season is the most since the 1993 team went 30-3 and sets the mark for the fifth most wins in Duke history. Duke's 20 ACC wins marks the first time any conference team has won 20 matches in a season.
Duke started out the match strong building an early 12-6 lead behind five kills from senior Tealle Hunkus. Summer Weissing led Florida State from behind the service line and tied the game at 12-12. Senior Polly Bendush then came on from behind the service line pushing a narrow 15-14 lead to 20-14 and the Blue Devils held even the rest of the way for the 30-23 win. Hunkus led the way in the first game with six kills while freshman Rachael Moss added five. Senior Pixie Levanas gave Duke a boost off the bench and recorded two kills on two swings late in the game.
In game two, each of Duke's six rotations produced an old fashioned point as Duke built an early 12-7 lead. Bendush helped push the lead to 18-10 and Duke held on for the 30-24 win. Junior Jenny Shull recorded eight digs in the second game and sophomore Jourdan Norman had four kills while hitting .571 in the game.
Florida State came out of the gate strong scoring the first seven points of game three behind Weissing's strong serving to force a Duke timeout. Junior Carrie DeMange then came alive and had two quick kills and Hausfeld recorded her ace to get Duke back on track. Shull then controlled the game most of the rest of the way. She served seven straight to give Duke its first lead at 13-12 and then later in the match took a 22-22 tie and pushed it to a 27-22 advantage for the Blue Devils. The Seminoles then mounted a strong comeback to tie the game at 29 all but a kill from Hausfeld gave Duke a one-point lead before she set up sophomore Sue Carls for the game winning kill.
When Shull wasn't serving Duke to a total of 13 points in game three, she was picking up one of her eight digs. Carls had five kills on just eight swings in game three and Duke's block also made a difference led by Hausfeld and Norman who each had four in the game.
For the match, Duke was led by Moss' 11 kills while Carls and Hunkus added nine apiece. Shull finished with 21 digs while Moss and Hunkus recorded eight each and after Hausfeld's six blocks, Norman and DeMange each finished with five.
Duke closes out the regular season Friday with a visit from the Miami Hurricanes for senior day. The match will hold first serve at 12 noon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
