CLEMSON, S.C. ? Junior Carrie DeMange posted a career-high 32 kills and had a .400 hitting percentage to lead No. 25 Duke to a 3-2 (30-28, 30-26, 28-30, 25-30, 15-9) win over Clemson on Saturday night at Jervey Gym. The Blue Devils improve to 19-3 overall and 12-1 in the ACC while the Tigers fall to 14-7 and 9-4, respectively.
DeMange's 32 kills tied for the fourth-highest single-match output in Duke history and the 20th highest output in the NCAA this season. Her 32 kills were the highest total in the ACC this season, as well.
“Carrie had a tremendous weekend,” Duke head coach Jolene Nagel said. “It's great that our team regrouped after a really tough match last night and was emotionally able to let it go and win another tough match tonight. I was really happy to see that we were able to do that.”
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead after a tight first game, edging the Tigers for a 30-28 game one victory. The teams traded leads until Duke had a four-point run that gave them an 18-16 advantage midway through the game. Clemson then knotted the score at 23-23 with a 7-5 run before a 4-1 Duke run gave the Blue Devils a three-point lead at 27-24. The Tigers would cut the lead to one on two occasions at the end of the match but it was not enough as the Blue Devils held on for a 30-28 game one victory.
After Duke and Clemson traded the first 12 points of game two, the Blue Devils went on a 10-6 run to take a 16-12 lead. A 3-0 Clemson run closed the gap to one at 16-15 before Duke extended its lead to six points at 27-21 with an 11-6 run. The Blue Devils then took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 30-26 game two victory.
Clemson opened game three with a 7- 3 advantage and held the lead until Duke tied the score at 20-20. The Blue Devils and Tigers then traded the next 14 points before Clemson pulled out a 30-28 game three win.
With the score knotted at 4-4 in the fourth game, Clemson used a 15-6 run to take a 19-10 lead. Duke would battle back with a 14-8 run to make it a three-point game at 27-24 but the Tigers scored three of the game's final four points to tie the match at two games apiece with a 30-25 game four victory.
In game five, Duke jumped out to a 6-3 lead to force a Clemson timeout. After Duke surged ahead by five points at 10-5, the Tigers were forced to call their second timeout of the game but it would not slow the Blue Devils down as they won the decisive fifth game, 15-9.
“I thought we did a great job in game five of regaining our composure and executing in order to be able to pull out the win,” Nagel added.
Junior Ali Hausfeld paced the Duke offense with a match-high 67 assists and added 15 digs defensively. Senior Tealle Hunkus had a season-high 19 kills to go along with 11 digs while freshman Rachael Moss posted 17 kills and 22 digs. Sophomore Jourdan Norman finished with eight kills and four blocks and sophomore Sue Carls added seven kills and a career-high eight assists.
Junior Jenny Shull anchored the Duke defense with a match-high 26 digs and DeMange added nine digs and four blocks to her career night offensively.
The Blue Devils will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium for a three-match homestand when they host N.C. State on Nov. 1, North Carolina on Nov. 3 and Wake Forest on Nov. 7. All three matches are slated for a 7 p.m. start.
