DURHAM, N.C. ? Junior Carrie DeMange had 16 kills and junior Jenny Shull recorded 23 digs as the Duke volleyball team defeated area rival N.C. State, 3-0 (30-12, 30-24, 30-16), Wednesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the victory, Duke improves to 20-3 overall and 13-1 in the ACC while the Wolfpack fall to 2-21 and 0-14, respectively.
With its 20th win of the season, Duke now has 18 seasons in its history with 20 or more victories, including six in coach Jolene Nagel's eight seasons in Durham.
Duke started the match off on a high note, as senior Polly Bendush recorded two early service aces in leading Duke to a 6-0 advantage in the first game. Bendush also served Duke to a 5-0 run midway through the game to give Duke a 20-6 lead and the Blue Devils held on for an impressive 30-12 victory.
Duke hit .486 in the first game while holding the Wolfpack to .000. DeMange and senior Tealle Hunkus led the way with five kills apiece while freshman Brittany Staffeil had three kills on six swings. Hunkus and Shull had seven digs apiece.
Game two was closer for the two teams. Sophomore Jourdan Norman led the Duke offense with four kills while hitting .571 while DeMange added five more kills and hit .625. The game was tied at 21 apiece before Shull served seven straight points for Duke, including a service ace, to put the game away as Duke won, 30-24. Freshman Chrissy Zirpolo led the Wolfpack with seven kills in the second game to keep the game interesting.
“I think they started to play better in the second game,” Nagel said. “It took us a little while to get going, but once we did, we were able to make a run at the end of the game and put it away. It's always a positive when you can do that at the end of a game.”
Game three started much like game two and the score was tied at 8-8 before Duke took the lead for good. Hunkus served eight straight points for Duke to push the lead to 18-9 and late in the game, junior Shelley Capito served three straight points to give Duke a 27-15 lead and the Blue Devils won, 30-16.
DeMange again had an impressive game with six kills for a .556 hitting percentage. Freshman Rachael Moss had four kills and six digs for the Blue Devils while Shull added nine more digs defensively.
The Blue Devils hit .352 for the match while holding N.C. State to just .039. Sophomore Sue Carls led the way hitting .800 while Norman finished hitting .556, DeMange .538, Hunkus .409, Moss .350 and junior Ali Hausfeld hit .333. Bendush finished with three aces while Hunkus had nine kills on 22 attacks with zero hitting errors. Hunkus added 12 digs and Moss had 13 digs to go with eight kills offensively.
“(N.C.) State definitely challenged us,” DeMange said. “Now we know what we need to take away from this match and move forward in the ACC. We're all looking forward to the next one, the rivalry, Duke vs. Carolina is always huge. We will need to come out strong against the Tar Heels.”
Duke will face North Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
