ATLANTA, Ga. ? The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets knocked off No. 25 Duke in a five-game thriller (30-23, 27-30, 30-15, 28-30, 22-24) on Friday night at O'Keefe Gymnasium, ending the Blue Devils' 19-match ACC winning streak, which dated back to last year. Duke falls to 18-3 overall and 11-1 in the ACC while Georgia Tech improves to 12-10 and 4-8, respectively.
The loss marks Duke's first conference defeat in 2006 and its first league loss since Nov. 4, 2005.
“Georgia Tech played great,” acknowledged Duke head coach Jolene Nagel. “We made too many unforced errors at crucial times and that made the difference. Our team will learn from this loss and we'll get better as a result of it.”
The Blue Devils jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead in the opening game before taking a nine-point lead at 18-9. Georgia Tech would cut the lead to six points on three occasions down the stretch but it was as close as they would get as Duke took game one, 30-23. The Blue Devils hit .349 in the opening game and held the Jackets to a .150 hitting percentage.
After the two teams traded the first six points of game two, Duke went on a 17-12 run to take a five-point lead at 20-15. Georgia Tech then used a 9-4 run to tie the game at 24-24. The Jackets would then go ahead 28-25 before the Blue Devils closed the score to 28-27. Georgia Tech then held on to tie the match at one game apiece with a 30-27 game two victory.
Duke dominated game three, jumping out to a 10-4 lead to force a Georgia Tech timeout. The Blue Devils would extend their lead to 10 points at 18-8, forcing the Jackets to use their second timeout of the game. Duke then closed out the game with a 12-7 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 30-15 game three victory. The Blue Devils hit .381 in the third game and held the Jackets to a .000 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils took control of game four early on and looked to be on their way to a win after a 14-3 start. The Jackets kept battling back throughout the game and tied the score at 27-27 with a 24-13 run. Georgia Tech would then send the match to a fifth and final game with a 30-28 game four win.
“We played well too,” Nagel added. “I'm just disappointed that we didn't capitalize on some opportunities when we had a lead in game four and let them back in the match.”
Duke and Georgia Tech traded the first 22 points of game five before the Jackets used a 3-1 run to take a 14-12 lead. The Blue Devils would then tie the game at 14-14 to stay alive. Duke held the lead six times down the stretch and the score would be tied on nine occasions before Georgia Tech pulled out the win with a 24-22 game five victory.
Junior Ali Hausfeld paced the Duke offense with a match-high 68 assists to go along with six kills, 12 digs and six blocks. Freshman Rachael Moss posted a career-high 22 kills and 12 digs, junior Carrie DeMange had a match-high 22 kills, a .354 hitting percentage and a season-high nine blocks and senior Tealle Hunkus added 16 kills for the Blue Devils.
