Durham, N.C. - Chris Loftus scored two goals and Spencer Wadsworth tallied a goal and an assist to lead Duke to a 3-1 victory over Longwood at Koskinen Stadium on Tuesday night.
With the win the Blue Devils improve to 6-1-1 on the season while Longwood drops to 2-6-1 overall.
Loftus continued his stellar season scoring a goal for the fourth straight game. He has now scored at least one goal in seven of Duke's eight contests. With the Blue Devils ahead 1-0, Loftus headed a pass from Wadsworth into the net to give Duke a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute. The goal would end up being Loftus' second game-winning goal of the year. Longwood came back and after a foul was called on the Blue Devils Leon Malca sent a free kick in to the goal box where Max Griesbach headed it in to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
Loftus came up big again just two minutes later, firing a blast from 25 yards out that bounced past the Lancers' goalkeeper, Brandt Youmans, for his second goal of the game and team-high eighth of the season. The score gave the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead. Youmans ended up facing 20 total shots by Duke and ended the game with six saves as ten of those shots were on goal. Tyler Marsh played the final 11 minutes of the game for Longwood and also recorded on save.
The Blue Devils held the Lancers to only four shots in the game and two shots on goal. Justin Papadakis played the full 90 minutes in goal for Duke and recorded one save to earn his sixth victory of the season.
Wadsworth scored Duke's first goal of the game. In the 15th minute, he received a crossing pass from Danny Miller and headed it in to the opposite side of the goal for his third score of the year. Wadsworth's goal and assist in the game now give him 12 total points on the season (three goals, six assists).
Michael Videira assisted on the third goal of the game for Duke to extend his points streak to six straight games with at least one point. The last Duke player to accomplish that feat was Jordan Cila in 2002.
Next up for Duke will be a road contest. They will travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on the newest member of the ACC, Boston College, at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles dropped to 4-2-1 with a 4-3 loss at home to Virginia on Saturday.
