Newton, Mass. - No. 7 Duke recorded their third shutout of the season with a 3-0 victory at Boston College on Friday night to improve to 7-1-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in the ACC. The loss drops Boston College to 4-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.
The Blue Devils had yet another strong first half in this contest with two goals to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Spencer Wadsworth scored his fourth goal of the season in the 12th minute off a feed from Kyle Helton. Later in the half, Wadsworth set up freshman forward Mike Grella for a one timer in the 22nd minute to give Duke a two goal advantage. Michael Videira also had an assist on the play to extend his points streak to seven straight games with at least one point. The goal was the fourth of the season for Grella. The Blue Devils have now outscored their opponents 14-1 in the first half this season and have scored the first goal of the game in eight of their nine contests.
Duke took a 3-0 lead in the second half when Danny Kramer scored off a rebound for his second of the season. Chris Loftus put a shot on goal but the Eagles' goalkeeper, Issey Maholo, couldn't hold on to the save and Kramer was there for the putback.
Justin Papadakis earned his second shutout of the season and third of his career with three saves in the game for Duke. Maholo made 12 saves in a losing effort for Boston College. The Blue Devils had a 20-9 advantage in total shots and 15-3 advantage in shots on goal for the game.
Duke will return home and have a week off before their next match. They will host No. 15 Maryland in Koskinen Stadium at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7. The game will be televised live nationally on the Fox Soccer Channel with Sean Wheelock handling the play-by-play.
