Durham, N.C. - No. 11 Maryland scored three goals in the second half to defeat No. 4 Duke, 3-1, on their home field in a nationally televised game by Fox Soccer Channel, Friday night at Koskinen Stadium.
Stephen King and Jason Garey each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Terrapins past the Blue Devils. King scored the first goal of the game in the 48th minute off a rebound. Robbie Rogers had his shot blocked but King chased the ball down on the other side of the box and sent it past Duke's sophomore goalkeeper Justin Papadakis.
The Blue Devils had a chance to tie the game at the 58:55 mark when Blake Camp took a penalty kick. However, Chris Seitz came up big in net for Maryland with a save and Camp was called for a handball on the follow-up attempt. Just under a minute later Camp made a nice move to get past the defense and found Tomek Charowski across the box for the tying goal. It was the first goal of the season for Charowski.
Maryland came back and regained the lead in the 74th minute. Jason Garey, the leading scorer in the ACC, tallied his 11th goal of the year after a pass from King. The Terps put the game away in the 83rd minute when Garey found Aki Kadotani, who dribbled the ball to the middle of the field and sent it in from 20 yards out.
The Terps controlled most of the second half and tallied 11 of their 12 shots in the game after halftime. Seitz came up big in goal with six saves to help lead Maryland to their eighth win of the year and third in conference play. They now stand at 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the ACC.
The loss is the first conference loss of the year for Duke as they fall to 2-1-1 in the league and 7-2-1 on the season. Papadakis finished the game with five saves. The Blue Devils held an 8-1 advantage in total shots in the first half, but failed to convert on their three shots on goal.
The Blue Devils will try and get back on track when they host Western Illinois on Tuesday at 7 p.m. They will then get back in to conference play on Oct. 16 when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. for a contest with Virginia at 1 p.m.
