Durham, N.C. - No. 8 Duke scored a goal in each half and held Western Illinois to just two shots on goal to record their fourth shutout of the year in a nonconference game at Koskinen Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Blue Devils came out strong in the opening stanza and took the lead in the 33rd minute when Tim Jepson sent a long pass in to the Leathernecks' zone and Zach Pope flew by the defense to fire it in for his third goal of the season. Jepson and Ryan Pascioni both recorded their first assists of the season on the play. Duke held an 8-1 advantage in total shots in the first half and have now outscored their opponents 15-1 in the first half this season. They also hold an 85-25 advantage in total shots before halftime.
After the break the Blue Devils struck for the second time of the game in the 52nd minute to a 2-0 lead. This time they countered off a corner kick by Western Illinois and Pope found Blake Camp in the middle of the field. Camp drove all the way from midfield, beating the defender one-on-one for his fourth goal of the year. Duke held on from there to close out the 2-0 win. Duke has now posted a shutout victory in three straight nonconference games.
Justin Papadakis made two saves in the game to record his third shutout of the season. Dave Hanlon played just under 72 minutes and made four saves. The loss was the first of the season for Hanlon who falls to 1-1 on the year.
With the win Duke improves to 8-2-1 on the season. They will hit the road for an ACC contest at Virginia. They play the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Sunday at 1 p.m. The Leathernecks fall to 3-8 on the year. They will also return to conference play with a game at UMKC on Saturday.
