Charlottesville, Va. - No. 4 Virginia scored with three minutes left in the game to give them a 1-0 victory over No. 8 in an ACC game at Charlottesville, Va. on Sunday. The shutout was the ninth of the season for the Cavaliers and was the first time the Blue Devils have failed to score a goal since their 5-0 loss to UCSB in the College Cup last season.
Duke played a man down for the final 24 minutes of the contest after Spencer Wadsworth was issued a red card. The extra man finally paid off for Virginia when Yannick Reyering tallied the game's only goal at the 87:05 mark off a feed from Adam Cristman. The goal was the tenth of the season for Reyering. Despite playing with one less player, the Blue Devils only allowed two shots during the final 24 minutes while Duke got four shots off.
The game was scoreless at the half as both teams caught some tough breaks. Michael Videira had a shot hit the post in the 19th minute for the Blue Devils and Virginia's Jeremy Barlow hit the crossbar in the 25th minute. The shots were even in the first half at 5-5. Justin Papadakis made all three of his saves before halftime to keep the Cavaliers off the board.
Virginia's Ryan Burke finished the game with three saves for his league-leading ninth shutout of the season. The Cavaliers improve to 10-1-2 on the season and remain undefeated in the ACC with a 5-0 record. Duke drops to 8-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play after suffering their second loss in the last three games.
Duke will try to get back on track on Friday when they host a conference match with N.C. State at 7 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium.
