Durham, N.C. - Blake Camp scored two goals and added an assist to lead No. 7 Duke past Temple, 5-0, in a nonconference game at Koskinen Stadium on Saturday.
Camp, a senior from Danielsville, Ga., gave Duke an early lead, capitalizing on a penalty kick at the 3:18 mark of the first half. Danny Kramer was fouled while taking the ball into the goal box. Camp took the shot and sent it in past Temple's goalkeeper Bryant Hosler for his second goal of the season. It was the sixth time in seven games that the Blue Devils scored first.
In the 20th minute, Camp set up freshman forward Mike Grella for his third goal of the season with a long pass. Grella was able to beat the defense back for the ball and put it in. Michael Videira also had an assist on the play, extending his points streak to five straight games with at least one point.
Junior captain Chris Loftus continued his tremendous season in the 29th minute with a header for his team-high sixth goal of the year. He surpasses his previous career-high of five goals in a season which he had in each of his first two years. He has now scored a goal in six of the seven games this year. The only game he didn't score in was a Duke loss to St. John's. Zach Pope sent a crossing pass to Loftus who was in perfect position for the goal. Just 24 seconds later, Pope was on the other end of a goal when Spencer Wadsworth dribbled the ball up the middle and passed it to him on the outside for his second score of the season.
The Blue Devils took the 4-0 lead into halftime and outshot the Owls 11-3 in the first stanza. Sophomore goalkeeper, Justin Papadakis made two saves in the first half to keep Temple off the board.
In the second half, Camp added his second goal of the game with a blast from 20 yards out that found the back of the net. The shot beat Temple's Tony Pratico who replaced Hosler in the 38th minute of the game. Both Temple keepers finished the game with one save. Scott Siegel came in to replace Papadakis with 9:10 left in the game and did not face a shot on goal.
With the win the Blue Devils improve to 5-1-1 on the season. Temple falls to 2-6 with the loss. The victory moves Head Coach John Rennie in to sole possession of sixth place among the winningest Division I coaches all-time with 418 career wins. He has won 374 of those contests since taking over at the helm at Duke. The win also came against his alma mater. Rennie graduated from Temple in 1967.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Longwood University in a nonconference game at 7 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium.
