Durham, N.C. - No. 10 Duke got off to a good start in conference play Sunday night, defeating No. 13 Wake Forest, 3-2, in the second minute of the second overtime in front of 3,478 fans at Koskinen Stadium.
The game-winning goal was scored by Zach Pope at the 101:47 mark in the extra period. Danny Kramer dribbled the ball in to the Demon Deacons zone and sent the ball across the goal box to a wide open Pope who sent the ball in to the net for his first goal of the season.
The Blue Devils came back from a 2-0 defecit in the game. With just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation, Chris Loftus took a pass from Mike Grella in front of the net and capitalized for his team-high fourth goal of the season. Loftus has scored a goal in all four of Duke's wins this season. In the 86th minute of play, Michael Videira took a free kick and sent the ball long into the goal box. Blake Camp got a touch on the ball and hit it to Kramer who was open for the header that tied the game 2-2. The goal was his first of the season.
Duke held the momentum throughout the two overtimes with seven total shots while not allowing any shots by the Demon Deacons. The Blue Devils just missed on two scoring chances in the first overtime. Kramer took an open shot just to the left of the goal, but Brian Edwards made a diving stop on the ball to keep the score tied. Edwards also made a save on a shot by Spencer Wadsworth with three minutes left.
Wake Forest scored the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute. Wells Thompson beat Duke's goalkeeper Justin Papadakis with a shot to the right corner of the goal. Mark Ellington put the Demon Deacons ahead by two with his fourth goal of the season in the 69th minute.
Edwards finished the game with eight saves while Papadakis made seven stops to pick up the win. Wake Forest drops to 3-2 on the year and 0-1 in the ACC.
With the win the Blue Devils improve to 4-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. It is the second win in overtime for Duke this season. They also defeated the College of Charleston on Sept. 9 with a game-winner in the first overtime. The win also moves Head Coach John Rennie into a tie for sixth on the all-time victories list in Division I men's soccer history with 417 career victories. Rennie has won 373 career games at Duke which is second among all-time ACC head coaches.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take on Virginia Tech in an ACC contest at 7 p.m. The Hokies ended Duke's 11-game winning streak to start last season with a 1-0 victory in Durham.
