Powered by Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Katie Chrest's five goals, Duke defeated second-ranked Virginia 16-12 on Saturday in ACC women's lacrosse action at Klockner Stadium. The fifth-ranked Blue Devils (9-2, 2-1 ACC) built an 11-3 halftime lead en route to handing the Cavaliers (6-2, 2-1 ACC) their second loss of the season.
Caline McHenry and the Blue Devil defense stifled Virginia's attack, limiting last year's Tewaaraton Trophy winner Amy Appelt to just two goals and the team to only nine shots in the first half and 22 overall. McHenry, Laura Anderson, Meghan Ferguson and Stefanie Sparks caused three turnovers apiece, forcing a total of 24 in the game.
Chrest opened scoring less than a minute into the game with an unassisted tally following the opening draw control win. The Cavaliers fired back with two-straight tallies from Kate Breslin and Tyler Leachman to go up 2-1 for their only lead of the contest.
The Blue Devils went on a 9-0 run over the course of the next 15:30 to go up 10-2 with 9:36 to play in the first half. Leigh Jester, Caroline Cryer and Kristen Waagbo each netted two goals apiece during that spree, while Chrest, Rachel Sanford and Jessica Adam added one each. Appelt found the back of the net for Virginia with 6:36 to play in the first to end the Cavalier drought to send the teams into halftime with an 11-3 score after another goal from Chrest.
The two teams traded goals to open the second stanza with Virgina's Kim Connors and Jester firing in tallies to move the score to 12-4, Duke. Virginia then went on a 6-1 run to pull within three at the 12:34 mark. Leading goal scorer Tyler Leachman put in three in that stretch before Duke scored two-straight goals to build a 15-10 cushion heading into the final 9:36 of action.
Virginia scored twice to pull within three again, but the Blue Devil defense didn't allow a shot for the final 4:58 of the game. Jester, who finished the day with four goals, added her final tally with 27 seconds to play to secure the Blue Devil win.
Now tied for first in the conference, both Duke and Virginia have one ACC contest remaining on the schedule before the conference tournament. Duke will host Virginia Tech on April 22, while the Cavaliers meet the Hokies on April 15 in Charlottesville.
The Blue Devils return to action next weekend with road games at Notre Dame and Northwestern. Duke faces off with the Fighting Irish on April 8 at 4:00 p.m. (CT) in South Bend before meeting the top-ranked Wildcats on April 10 at 1:00 p.m. (CT) in Evanston.
