NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Led by Rachel Sanford's four goals, the second-ranked Blue Devils overtook Notre Dame 11-8 Friday evening at Moose Krause Stadium. With the win, Duke heads into Sunday's contest against No. 1 Northwestern with a 10-2 record and a five-game winning streak in tow, while the Fighting Irish fall to 3-7 on the season.
While Sanford scored four goals, including a pair late in the game to halt an Irish comeback, junior goalkeeper Megan Huether made 11 saves to lead Duke to the win. Katie Chrest and Caroline Cryer scored two goals each while Kristen Waagbo, Katie Laschinger and Michelle Menser had single goals for the Blue Devils.
Waagbo opened scoring just over three minutes into the game with an unassisted tally, followed by Cryer at the 24:07 mark to send the Blue Devils up 2-0 early in the contest. Lena Zentgraf scored for the Irish at 15:48 off a pass from Crysti Foote before Duke went on a 3-0 run to go up 5-1 with 7:25 to play. Sanford scored two goals in that stretch, while Katie Laschinger added another. After a Notre Dame goal from Caitlin McKinney, the teams headed into halftime with a 5-2 score in Duke's favor.
After nearly eight scoreless minutes in the second frame, Cryer found the back of the net off a pass from Chrest with 22:06 to play. Menser increased the lead to 7-2 with a free position goal, but the Fighting Irish fought back with two-straight goals to bring the game within three. Three of the next four goals went to the Blue Devils, including back-to-back tallies from Sanford, giving Duke a 10-5 advantage to tie the biggest lead of the game.
In a strong last-ditch effort, Notre Dame scored two quick goals to bring the score to 10-7 with 3:56 to play, but the Blue Devil defense buckled down, while Chrest scored her second goal of the game at 0:45 to affirm the victory. The Irish scored the final goal of the game with 0:17 to play, but it was too little, too late as Duke rolled to the 11-8 win.
The Blue Devils return to action Sunday at top-ranked Northwestern with a 1:00 p.m. (CT)/2:00 p.m. (ET) game against the Wildcats. Northwestern defeated Stanford Friday by a score of 16-3. Lindsey Munday, Laura Glassanos and Kate Darmody each netted a hat trick in the win to give the Wildcats their 11th straight win and extend their record to 11-0 on the year.
