Cary, N.C. - No. 9 Duke advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Men's Soccer Tournament in Cary, N.C. with a 2-0 shutout against No. 10 Virginia Tech on Wednesday.
The Blue Devils opened up an even game at the end of the first half when Chase Perfect scored his first goal of the season off a corner kick. With 1:42 left on the clock, Tomek Charowski took the kick and sent it to the other side of the box. Chris Loftus headed the ball back towards the middle where Perfect was in position to head the ball in to the net. Perfect, a junior from Durham, N.C. had appeared in just four games coming in to the tournament with a total of 30 minutes played. It was the third goal of his career.
“I didn't even know I was going to dress as of last night,” said Perfect. “I wasn't sure how many players we were allowed to bring.”
The first half was controlled by the two squads' defenses with Duke tallying four shots and Virginia Tech managing just two. The game opened up more in the second half with Duke holding an 8-5 advantage in total shots. They had an opportunity to take a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute with a give-and-go by Spencer Wadsworth and Michael Videira, but Wadsworth's shot was saved by the Hokies' goalkeeper, Chase Harrison. Virginia Tech had their best scoring opportunity in the 70th minute when Marcus Reed broke past the defense and had a one-on-one opportunity with Blue Devils' goalkeeper, Justin Papadakis. Duke was able to keep the Hokies off the board as Papadakis made one of his two saves in the game to keep the lead intact.
Zach Pope would tack on a goal in the final second of the game. Harrison was playing up at midfield with the clock running out and Pope gained control of the ball, sending it from the midfield line into the net for his fourth goal of the year.
The win is the first for Duke in an ACC Tournament since 2000 when they defeated Maryland, 2-1 in overtime. The shutout was the sixth of the season for Papadakis and seventh of the year for the Blue Devils.
Duke will be back in action on Friday at 5:30 p.m. when they face top seeded Maryland. The Terrapins defeated Wake Forest 2-1 in the quarterfinal round. The championship game will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. and will be aired live on Fox Sports Net South, Comcast SportsNet and Sun Sports Network.
