Cary, N.C. - Blake Camp scored two goals in the first half to lead No. 9 Duke past No. 1 Maryland, 4-2, in the semifinal round of the ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C. on Friday.
Camp scored both of his goals off set plays. He tallied his first goal at the 12:47 mark when he converted a free kick opportunity after Zach Pope was fouled. Just 2:16 later, Camp headed in a throw-in pass from Darrius Barnes to put the Blue Devils ahead 2-0. The two goals give Camp nine for the season, tied for the team lead.
It was the third time this season Camp has scored two goals in a game. He also had a pair in a 5-0 win against Temple and in a 2-1 victory against Stony Brook. It is the fifth time this season, a Duke player has scored multiple goals in a game. Danny Kramer had two against N.C. State and Chris Loftus scored two against Longwood.
Maryland put the pressure on Duke's defense in the final ten minutes of the first half with five shots and five corner kicks. Maurice Edu had a shot on target but Brad Ramsey was standing at the post and kicked the shot away with just under nine minutes left. Less than two minutes later, Chris Lancos hit the post with a shot.
In the second half, Pope added to the Blue Devils' lead when he scored his fifth goal of the season from 18 yards out on the right side of the net off a feed from Spencer Wadsworth.
The Blue Devils held the lead until late in the second half when the Terps made another surge. Jason Garey scored his 20th goal of the season at the 82:25 mark, giving him a point in 12 sraight games. Robbie Rogers then cut the lead to one goal in the 88th minute off a corner kick. Lancos took the kick and sent it to the opposite side of the box where Kenney Bertz headed it to Rogers for the goal.
Duke sealed the victory with 55 seconds left when Wadsworth took a pass from Kramer and put it in for his sixth of the year. Bertz kicked the ball away but the officials ruled the ball had already crossed over the goal line.
The last time Duke defeated the No. 1 team in the country was last season when they traveled to College Park, Md. and upset the Terps, 2-1, to stay undefeated at 9-0. It is the Blue Devils' fifth win against a ranked team this season and second of the ACC Tournament.
Justin Papadakis made five saves in the game to earn the victory for the Blue Devils as he made three saves on shots by Garey, the leading scorer in the ACC in the game. Chris Seitz stopped four shots in a losing effort.
With the win, Duke advances to the finals for the first time since 1999 when they won the ACC Championship with a 2-1 victory in overtime against Virginia. It is the fifth time that the Blue Devils have advanced to the finals of the ACC Tournament.
The championship game will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. and will be aired live on Fox Sports Net South, Comcast SportsNet and Sun Sports Network. The Blue Devils will face the winner of the semfinal game between North Carolina and Clemson.
