Durham, N.C. - No. 5 Duke suffered a 3-1 loss to Clemson on senior night at Koskinen Stadium on Friday. The loss ends the regular season for the Blue Devils as they fall to 10-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the ACC. The Tigers improve to 10-4-3 overall and 2-4-2 in the conference.
Duke trailed 1-0 at halftime and despite holding a 12-2 advantage in total shots in the second half, could not come back. The Tigers made the most of their opportunities with goals on both of their shots in the second stanza. Dane Richards scored his team-high seventh goal of the season just 2:48 in to the second half when Duke goalkeeper Justin Papadakis tried to clear the ball but it was blocked to Richards who knocked it in from in front of the net.
Spencer Wadsworth brought the Blue Devils back to within one goal at the 57:53 mark when he flicked the ball in to the bottom left corner of the net for his fifth of the season. However, Bryson Moore put the Tigers back up by two goals when he took a pass from Randy Albright and set it in from in front of the net with just over 30 minutes to play.
Albright gave Clemson the early lead off a Blue Devils turnover. The ball was deflected by Albright and he gained control to put it in past Papadakis in the seventh minute of the contest.
Phil Marfuggi picked up the win in net for Clemson with two saves in the game. Papadakis also made two saves in a losing effort. The Blue Devils are now 0-4-1 when scoring less than two goals. The only time they didn't lose was in a scoreless tie at North Carolina. Clemson was only the second team to score on Duke in the first half this season. The other was Wake Forest on Sept. 18.
Prior to the game, Duke honored their four seniors, Blake Camp, Ian Carey, Danny Kramer and Hub Orr.
Next up for both teams will be the ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C. next week. The tournament will be held at the SAS Soccer Complex and will run from Tuesday to Sunday.
