DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-19) victory over No. 24 Maryland on Friday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium, handing the Terrapins their second loss of the season. The Blue Devils improve to 17-7 overall and 11-5 in the ACC, while Maryland falls to 24-2 overall and 15-2 in the conference.
The win for Duke marks the first time the Blue Devils defeated a ranked opponent since Oct. 15, 2002, when they knocked off No. 20 Georgia Tech, 3-2. Duke's 3-0 victory over Maryland also marks the first sweep of a ranked opponent since Oct. 17, 1992, when the Blue Devils rolled over No. 17 Georgia.
Trailing 6-10 in game one, Duke went on a 13-7 run to take a 19-17 lead. Maryland then tied it at 19-19 before taking a 23-22 lead late in the game. Trailing by one point, the Blue Devils used an 8-2 run, capped off by a kill from senior Samantha Fisher, to win the opening frame, 30-25.
With game two tied at 5-5, Duke went on a 7-1 run to take a 12-6 advantage. Maryland battled back to tie the game at 16-16 before the Blue Devils used a 14-4 run to close out the frame. Duke went on two five-point runs during the second frame, including a five-point run to end the game, 30-20.
In the final game, Duke used a six-point run to take a 13-6 lead. The Blue Devils then used another six-point run late in the game to go ahead 26-13. The Terps managed to score six of the next ten points but it was not enough as Duke wrapped up the match with a 30-19 win.
Sophomore Carrie DeMange recorded her 18th double-double of the season, posting a match-high 16 kills and a career-high 21 digs in the win. Sophomore Ali Hausfeld registered her 12th double-double of the year, leading the Blue Devils with 37 assists and 10 digs, while junior Tealle Hunkus notched her 11th double-double, posting 12 kills and 12 digs. Fisher added nine kills and senior Sarah Salem recorded seven kills for Duke.
The Blue Devil defense was anchored by sophomore Jenny Shull, who had a match-high 28 digs. Salem added nine digs and DeMange recorded six block assists defensively.
Duke will play host to Boston College (7-19, 2-15 ACC) tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke defeated Boston College, 3-1, on Oct. 14 in Chestnut Hill, Mass., in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The Eagles are coming off a 3-0 loss to Wake Forest, suffered earlier tonight.
