Chapel Hill, N.C. - No. 4 Duke and No. 8 North Carolina played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer to finish with a 0-0 tie in an ACC showdown at Letzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Friday night. The game was televised live nationally by Fo Soccer Channel with Sean Wheelock handling the play-by-play duties.
The two teams battled throughout the game with both defenses coming up strong. The game went back-and-forth in the first half with both squads coming up with three shots but no shots on goal. The game shifted slightly in Duke's favor after halftime as they held an 8-3 advantage in total shots with three shots on goal. In the overtime periods, North Carolina had the only shot attempt in the first period while Duke had a 2-0 advantage in the second overtime with one shot on goal.
One of Duke's best scoring opportunities came in the 80th minute of the contest after a foul was called on the Tar Heels. Michael Videira worked his way to an open spot from 15 yards out and Justin Hughes made a diving save to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
Justin Papadakis played all 110 minutes for Duke to earn the shutout. It was his fifth of the year and sixth of the season for the Blue Devils. They are now 2-0-2 in overtime games this season. They defeated the College of Charleston and Wake Forest. Their other tie came against Virginia Tech.
In just his fifth start of the season, Hughes earned his fourth shutout. He has only allowed two goals in 476:08 minutes this season. He finished the game with four saves. North Carolina has now only allowed 13 goals in 17 games this year with ten shutouts.
The tie gives both teams a half point in the Carlyle Cup, a yearlong competition between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels sponsored by Carlyle & Co. of Greensboro, N.C. Duke entered the game undefeated in Carlyle Cup action this fall. They earned a half point with a 3-2 win in volleyball on Sept. 29. The Duke field hockey team upset the No. 3 Tar Heels, 2-1, on Sept. 23 and the women's soccer team defeated No. 1 North Carolina, 2-1, on Oct. 9.
The 3, 585 fans who attended the Duke-North Carolina Friday night was the second largest crowd for a men's soccer game played in Chapel Hill. It came second to another match between the Blue Devils and Tar Heels in 1999 when 3,825 fans packed in to Fetzer Field.
Duke will return home next week for their final game of the season. They will host Clemson at 7 p.m. on senior night at Koskinen Stadium Saturday night.
