Hatch won Duke’s Most Improved Award for 2002 as the 9:30 prep two-miler went on to run an incredible 14:23.41 for 5,000-meters, the fastest time outdoors by a Duke runner in 2002.Hatch’s great freshman campaign began in cross country where he ran as the No. three man for Duke at NCAA Championships.His 31:05 10,000-meter clocking in his hometown of Greenville made him one of the nation’s top freshmen and helped Duke to a 14th place team finish, fourth best in the school’s history.Nine days earlier at the NCAA Southeast Regional, Hatch finished 23rd in 31:10 to capture All-Region honors.Hatch ran a gutsy 14th at the US Juniors in February at Portland, Ore., to wrap up cross country, then just five days later scored in his first ACC indoor meet with a 14:43.49 5,000-meters, good enough for seventh place in the ACC and to qualify Michael for IC4A’s.There he ran a 62 second final 400 to capture the unseeded 5,000 in 14:37.39, the fastest freshmen clocking in the IC4A and good enough for ninth overall.His 14:23.41 Duke freshman record in the 5,000 came at the Duke Invitational.
