Mang Picks Up Second Consecutive All-ACC Accolade
DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore Melissa Mang has been named to the 2007 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis team for the second consecutive year, as was announced on Thursday by conference officials.
Mang compiled a dual match record of 10-9 this season, playing mostly at the No. 2 singles spot while also seeing time at the top flight. She went 3-8 versus ACC opponents and has been ranked in four straight FILA/ITA national listings, ranking as high as 59th on March 20. She now ranks 85th.
The New Orleans, La., native has also combined with senior Daniela Bercek for a dual match doubles mark of 13-4, with 12 of those wins coming at the No. 1 position. The duo currently ranks 10th in the nation and holds a record of 5-2 versus ranked opponents.
Mang was named ACC Player of the Week on March 19 for her efforts on Duke’s spring trip to California, as she went 3-0 in both singles and doubles action versus No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 19 Tennessee and 60th-ranked Princeton.
Mang has received All-ACC recognition in each of her two years at Duke and became the first Blue Devil since 2002 to garner ACC Freshman of the Year accolades in her rookie season (2006).
Duke boasts a league-leading 73 all-time All-ACC selections, with the next closest school recording 46 (Wake Forest).
The Duke women’s tennis team defeated Virginia Tech, 4-0, in an ACC Tournament first round matchup on Thursday. The Blue Devils will advance to the quarterfinal round where they will face No. 2 seed Georgia Tech on Friday at 12 p.m.
