DURHAM, N.C. β Top-ranked Northwestern scored with 20 seconds left in the second quarter and held off No. 5 Duke to hand the Blue Devils a tough 1-0 loss in non-conference field hockey action Friday night at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
The Blue Devils outshot the Wildcats, 7-6, for the game as Northwestern goaltender Juliana Boon made four stops to secure the shutout. Duke drops to 1-2 overall for the season while Northwestern improves to 3-0.
How it Happened
- The first half was an even affair with both teams having quality possession in their offensive thirds. Duke's Alaina McVeigh fired the first shot of the game, beating a Wildcat defender and trying to slip it past Boon in the opening two minutes.
- Northwestern had a shot blocked off its lone penalty corner late in the opening period as the Blue Devils and Wildcats headed into the first break scoreless.
- The offense picked up in the second quarter and was as even as the first with Duke holding a 3-2 edge in shots. Duke, doing well to get into the penalty circle, was unable to capitalize on a pair of corners late in the period.
- Northwestern, after being stifled by Duke's defensive efforts throughout the second period, earned a trio of corners in the final two-plus minutes. The Wildcats finally capitalized with 20 seconds remaining as Ilse Tromp's sweep from the top of the circle found the back of the cage for the 1-0 lead.
- Duke refused to go away in the second half, firing three shots and earning a pair of penalty corners in the third quarter. Northwestern stood strong and avoided a penalty corner call late in the fourth quarter to come away with the 1-0 win.
- Both teams had six penalty corners apiece. Kaiya Chepow had one save in goal in her 57 minutes of action. McVeigh led all Blue Devils in shots with three on the night, including two that landed on frame.
