Brooks Leads America To USA China Friendship Cup

BEAUMONT, Calif. ? America, who was coached by Duke Women's Golf Head Coach Dan Brooks, claimed a 25 1/2 - 10 1/2 victory in the inaugural USA China Friendship Cup at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif. Team USA won the first eight matches of the day and earned 9 1/2 of the round’s 12 points

    “Again today - as it was all week - the theme was finishing strong,” said Team USA Men’s Coach O.D. Vincent. “When our guys would hit No. 7 or 8 they would kick it another gear. I had so much fun this week spending time with the players on the team and learning their different personalities. It’s great to see people who compete on different teams or may not have met before this week really come together as a team. They were very supportive of each other.”

    “I’m also very proud of how the Chinese competed,” continued Vincent. “These matches were very hard fought. The final result may have seemed lopsided, but so many of these matches went 18 and could have gone either way. China has good players who showed tremendous sportsmanship. They are raising the level of golf in China and certainly played well enough to win this competition.”

    Bronson Burgoon and Chris Killmer both won their matches 5 and 4, downing Wu Ashun and Fu Zhongyang, respectively. Chris Moore earning the clinching point by downing Hu Mu, 3 and 1. Sam Cyr posted a 2 and 1 come-from-behind victory against Ye Jianfeng. Brett Willis defeated Han Ren, 4 and 2, while Cameron Tringale posted a 4 and 3 win. Brian Locke continued the U.S. streak with a came-from behind victory against Yang Wenzhang, 3 and 2.

    Japan would earn its only victories of the day when Li Wei downed Kristi Piepenbrink, 6 and 5, and Yang Taoli defeated Kimbra Kosak, 5 and 4.

    Jacqui Concolino put the Americans back on the winning track by a winning 6 and 5 against Zhou Xiaoxuan. Ben Fox earned a half point for Team USA when he battled back to halve Su Dong. Jennifer Osborn won the final match of the competition, 2-up, over Huang Ping.
