DURHAM, N.C. — Sixteenth-ranked Virginia outscored No. 7 Duke, 5-1, in the third quarter to pull away for a 14-10 victory in ACC men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils fall to 8-2 overall and 0-2 in ACC play while the Cavaliers improve to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in league action. Duke was led on offense by freshman
Michael Ortlieb's five points from two goals and three assists.
Kyle Colsey added a hat trick for the Blue Devils.
Virginia's attack unit combined for five goals and four assists with Truitt Sunderland posting four tallies and Brendan Millon quarterbacked the offense with a goal and four assists.

How it Happened
- The first 30 minutes were nip and tuck with neither team leading by more than two goals. Virginia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 1:41 before Duke settled in on defense to hold the Cavaliers without a goal for over 10 minutes.
- Senior Max Sloat got Duke on the board at the 11:46 mark and Benn Johnston tied the game with seven minutes left in the quarter.
- Ryan Colsey ended Virginia's scoring drought with 1:55 remaining in the stanza to put the Cavaliers up 3-2 at the first break.
- After Virginia went ahead 4-2 at the start of the second frame, Duke responded with four of the next five for its first lead of the game at 6-5. Ortlieb had a hand in three of the four goals with a goal and two assists. Kyle Colsey, Brady Scioletti and Cal Girard added the other three markers in a span of 4:30 to take a 6-5 lead into the locker room.
- The third quarter was all Cavaliers, as Virginia outscored the Blue Devils 5-1. Virginia shut down the Duke offense, holding the Blue Devils to eight shots in the period and forcing five turnovers. Offensively, Virginia scored five goals on 10 shots.Â
- Trailing 10-7 to start the fourth quarter, Scioletti got Duke within two again with his second of the afternoon just 18 seconds into the stanza. Virginia's Joey Terenzi answered to make it a three-score game again and the Cavaliers never let the Blue Devils get closer than two goals.
- Kyle Colsey capped the scoring for Duke with two goals in the final nine minutes, but a 3-1 run by the Cavaliers in the final five minutes gave Virginia its first regular season win over Duke since 2004.
- Cal Girard took the majority of faceoffs, going 9-of-18 and picking up four ground balls. Ben McCarthy went 5-of-8 at the dot and scooped up three ground balls.
- The Blue Devils outshot Virginia, 47-34, and had a narrow 35-33 edge in ground balls. Cavalier goalie Jake Marek had 13 saves to anchor the Cavaliers' defensive effort.Â
- Patrick Jameison made seven saves across the 60 minutes for Duke.
- Charlie Johnson spearheaded the Duke defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while holding McCabe Millon without a point and to just three total shots.
