Duke senior tight end Mike Hart will miss the season finale at Clemson on December 1 after undergoing ankle surgery on Monday. The surgery will be performed by Duke head team physician Dr. Claude T. Moorman, who serves the Director of the Duke Sports Medicine Clinic.
Hart, a 6-6, 260-pound native of Sayville, N.Y., suffered the injury early in the second period of Duke's game at North Carolina this past Saturday. Moorman indicated that a full recovery is expected.
"We are obviously disappointed for Mike to have his playing career at Duke end this way," said Duke head coach Carl Franks. "He has had both an outstanding season and career and we wish him the best in his recovery from this injury."
A second team All-ACC selection and Duke's MVP last season, Hart closes the 2001 campaign with 30 pass receptions for 476 yards and four touchdowns. Hart, who owns the nation's longest active streak for consecutive games - 22 - with at least one pass reception by a tight end, enjoyed his finest day with the Blue Devils on November 3 against N.C. State by establishing career single-game bests with 10 catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
Rated as the fifth top senior tight end in the country by ESPN's Mel Kiper, Jr., Hart finishes his 40-game Duke career with 86 catches for 1,380 yards and six touchdowns.
