ATLANTA, Ga. – Duke baseball faced a trio of multi-run deficits at No. 3 Georgia Tech and rallied to take the lead in the seventh inning, but eventually fell, 10-9, in extra innings on Friday, May 8.
The Blue Devils (23-26, 9-16Â ACC) trailed by four twice, at 5-1 and 7-3, but immediately answered both times with multi-run innings at the plate, fueled by home runs from
Collin Anderson and
Kaden Smith. Later on, in the top of the seventh, Anderson recovered from down 0-2 with two outs, working the count full before lacing a two-RBI single to center field, giving Duke a 9-8 lead.
After the Yellow Jackets (40-8, 20-5 ACC) tied the game at nine,
Jack Hedrick was key in getting the game to extras. The sophomore threw 4.1 innings out of the bullpen and held a potent Georgia Tech offense to just two runs across 69 total pitches.Â
Strand increased his team-leading home run total to 12, while Smith remained right behind Strand, with 11 homers of his own. Smith and Anderson co-led the team with three runs driven in, with the freshman Anderson setting his new single-game high for RBI and Smith moving into the overall team lead for the category, at 38.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Georgia Tech opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, with a homer by the second batter of the frame. Matthew Strand answered right back, leading off the top of the second with a bullet over the left-field fence.
- A clean third inning by both starters kept the game tied at 1-1, before the Yellow Jackets posted a four spot in the home half of the fourth.
- Collin Anderson led off the top of the fifth with a home run to left field and Duke scratched across another run later in the frame off a fielder's choice to third base. The hosts also scored a pair of runs in the fifth, extending their lead back to four runs, 7-3.
- Jake Lambdin and RJ Hamilton both singled to start the sixth and Kaden Smith clobbered a three-run homer to draw Duke within one, 7-6. Georgia Tech edged back in front by a pair of runs with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
- Duke's offense once again responded with three more runs in its next trip to the plate. After a leadoff single by Coltin Quagliano, Lambin was awarded first base on catcher's interference. Hamilton shot a 0-2 pitch through the right side of the infield, scoring Quagliano and advancing Lambdin to second. A balk by the Yellow Jackets then moved both runners into scoring position.
- With two outs, Anderson faced an 0-2 hold before taking three straight pitches for balls and then slashing a two-RBI single to center, putting the Blue Devils in front, 9-8.
- Georgia Tech's fifth home run of the night tied the score at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh.
- Duke forced extra innings with Strand throwing out Georgia Tech's pinch runner on an attempted advance for the final out of regulation. The Blue Devils were unable to score in the top of the 10th and Georgia Tech led off the home half with a triple, which proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly four pitches later.
