DURHAM, N.C. - Duke hosted Queens for a midweek contest at Jack Coombs Field, with the two teams combining for 10 runs in the first five innings before the Royals (14-33) eventually staked claim to an 11-7 victory. The Blue Devils (23-25) out-hit Queens, 11-9, including a pair of two-home run performances from
Kaden Smith and
Michael DiMartini, but Duke was unable to rally for the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams struck in the first inning with home runs, with Queens posting a solo shot in the top of the first and RJ Hamilton giving Duke the lead, 2-1, with a two-run homer to right center.
- Michael DiMartini followed with a trip around the bases of his own, in the second inning, going to straight-away center field, pushing the Blue Devils' lead to 3-1.
- The Royals leveled the score with an RBI hit by pitch and an unearned run in the top of the third. Kaden Smith promptly answered, with Duke's third homer of the evening, a two-run blast to deep left field in the home half of the third.
- Queens worked two more bases-loaded hit by pitches, tying the score, 5-5, in the fifth.
- Smith laced his 10th total home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning, clearing the center-field fence with a solo shot.
- The Royals scored the next four runs, grabbing control of the contest, 9-6, through the top of the sixth.
- DiMartini chipped away, with a solo homer in the home half, going straight down the left-field line for his eighth long ball of the season.
- Queens added insurance in the top of the ninth, taking an 11-7 lead that would eventually prove to be the final scoreline.
